Village Musician

POSTION SUMMARY

This position is open Fall of 2024. Music is an essential part of life at Holden Village, especially during our time of Sacred Space. This person will work as a vital member of the worship team to facilitate music for sacred space and other significant moments in the village. This person will be responsible for providing and/or organizing musical offerings for the rhythms of evening sacred spaces. This will include organizing village staff, guests, and summer faculty to provide music, and welcoming and encouraging members of the community to share their musical gifts during and outside of Sacred Space. Collaboration with the worship assistant, the pastor, and any visiting faculty musicians will be integral in this person’s role. This position is part-time, and must be combined with another volunteer position.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Accompany Daily worship services and help with the planning of music in worship.
  • Coordinate and Integrate staff and guests who play other instruments into worship.
  • Organize and cultivate music resources in the village, including maintaining our music library.
  • Understand and maintain the various musical instruments in the village.
  • Regularly coordinate the tuning of the eight village pianos.

UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to sight-read music, chord charts, and lead sheets
  • Knowledge of basic music theory and ability to perform transpositions or re-harmonization
  • Ability to compose, arrange, and write parts and scores a plus
  • Dependable, trustworthy, organized, and compassionate

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

Specific knowledge and skills include but are not limited to the following:

  • Accompany daily worship services on piano or guitar and help with the planning of music in worship.
  • Coordinate and integrate staff and guests who play other instruments into worship, including recruiting/inviting other musicians to sing or play instruments for worship, and organizing and leading rehearsals.
  • Organize and cultivate music resources in the village, including maintaining our music library.
  • Understand and maintain the various musical instruments in the village.
  • Regularly coordinate the tuning of the eight village pianos.

  • Commits to staying up-do date on all required vaccinations.

As a Long-Term Volunteer, you are eligible for the following compensation and benefits:

  • $550/month stipend

Education

Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
