Accountant Lead/Senior Bookkeeper

POSTION SUMMARY

This position will be open in April 2025. The Holden bookkeeper will handle the full cycle of accounting duties and maintain accurate financial records for Holden Village, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

(principal duties and responsibilities; such as categories supported, staff size, volume managed, etc)

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Receive, record, and deposit accounts receivable from multiple revenue centers including credit card, check, and cash income
  • Prepare invoices
  • Oversee procurement and cash handling for the organization, including training and supervising volunteer staff
  • Record and pay accounts payable assuring expenditures are in accordance with code balances for item acquisition
  • Process payroll, pay employment taxes, sales and use tax, and benefit contributions
  • Reconcile bank accounts, purchasing cards, and cash accounts
  • Prepare and record monthly Journal Entries, calculate accruals, review G/L accounts for reasonableness
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and clear reconciling items, ensure early detection of variances and process breakdowns
  • Generate financial reports and provide variance analysis
  • Provide timely month end and year end closing
  • Monitor and maintain stable cash flow
  • Complete the Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return and Department of Labor and Industries Report
  • Generate and distribute annual W-2’s and 1099MISC reports
  • Prepare annual audit schedules and assist in audit preparation
  • Assist with budget preparation
  • Document existing procedures and provide recommendations to improve them
  • Provide ad-hoc business and financial reports
  • Maintain a coherent system of accounts, with a supporting filing system, both digital and physical

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

(position specifications; such as knowledge/education, skills, problem solving/decision making, risk/bottom line results, management responsibility – people and functions)

Specific knowledge and skills include but are not limited to the following:

  • Five (5) years professional accounting experience OR
  • Associate degree in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field AND three (3) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field AND one (1) year of professional accounting experience
  • Experience in non-profit accounting preferred
  • Understand generally-accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Advance skills in Quick Books and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience using database software
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with sound judgment and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to work independently and manage own time to meet hard deadlines
  • Ability to interact positively with people at all levels and in all capacities, i.e. vendors, guests, volunteers, managers, directors
  • Positive, problem-solving attitude with a willingness to provide and seek guidance from team members
  • Ability to see the “big picture” and be proactive

Education

Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
