POSTION SUMMARY

Hiring now! This role is a part-time role that involves additional job placement. The primary role of the Backup Medic is to provide health care for villagers on an on-call basis, within the bounds of established policies and protocols and within the guidelines of their professional licensure. Further, the Medic provides education to the staff and guests about health and safety, particularly in the realm of communicable disease issues. The Medic manages all aspects of the First Aid Station and is sometimes involved in recruiting, maintaining and training of the Holden Village First Response Team.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

(principal duties and responsibilities; such as categories supported, staff size, volume managed, etc)

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Work on an on-call basis
    • Carry a radio for designated call time and keep radio charged.
    • Work with the Medic to establish a 24/7 medical coverage plan between people.
    • Typically, provide coverage for 48 hours a week and work in another department for the remaining three days of the work week.
  • Provide medical care for villagers
    • Maintain regular office hours at the First Aid Station so that routine care is readily accessible.
    • Deliver care within the guidelines of practitioner’s professional license and margin of comfort, remembering always that we are not meant to be a Primary Care walk-in clinic.
    • Learn/demonstrate how to do basic health assessment – BP, pulse, pulse oximeter, glucose monitoring, temperature
    • Familiarize self with where things are located in the Medic station
    • Review health forms of future staff, noting any medical conditions that may create difficulties in a wilderness setting.
    • Maintain necessary health care records and assure their confidential storage. If there is an illness or injury of any real consequence, these records should be printed out and given to patients when they leave the Village.
  • Assist the Medic as a provider of emergency care and provide care independently when the Medic is off or not in the Village.
    • Coordinate and deliver emergency care to injured or ill villagers.
    • Determine, in consultation with the Village Incident Commander (who coordinates emergency response efforts), whether an injured/ill person needs to be evacuated from the village.
    • Ensure 24/7 emergency care coverage for the Village. Typically, this looks like 24/5 care by the Medic and developing a coverage schedule for the remaining days by the Backup Medic(s) and First Response Team Members.
    • Maintain the emergency packs, equipment, and supplies to ensure their readiness.
  • Assistant manager of First Aid Station
    • Work with the Medic to maintain an adequate inventory of medications, supplies and equipment to render routine and emergent patient care, and request budget approval for necessary items from the Medic.
    • Collaborate with the Program Team (Hike Haus Head and Naturalist) to ensure hiking first aid kit supplies are maintained.
    • Monitor and restock first aid supplies in First Aid Kits in the Village.
    • Maintain equipment utilized in First Aid Station and by the First Response Team.
  • Additional responsibilities
    • Learn how to drive and operate the ADA van and be available for medical transport if needed.
    • Participate in First Response Team meetings and assist the Medic and Risk and Safety Lead in implementing training topics as needed.
    • Participate in and assist the Medic in health and safety initiatives.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

(position specifications; such as knowledge/education, skills, problem solving/decision making, risk/bottom line results, management responsibility – people and functions)

Specific knowledge and skills include but are not limited to the following:

  • Current licensure as a WFR, EMT or higher certification is required.
  • Basic CPR certification is required.
  • Good assessment skills, sound judgment and the ability to work both independently are essential. Previous experience in the applicants chosen healthcare field is essential to the solid foundation of knowledge and judgment required in this position.
  • Flexibility with schedule and ability to adapt to both the medic team and the other team that would combine to a full-time position.
  • Calm demeanor and ability to handle emergency situations.
  • Ability to work in collaboration with emergency management teams (First Response Team, Medic, Incident Command, and outside agencies)

Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
