Holden Village has a story to tell… of the past, present, and future.
The new museum is a chance to convey not only Holden’s heritage (human, industrial, and natural) but also to capture its ongoing spirit.
The Portal museum echoes the simple design of village lodges: long, rectangular structures with steeply pitched corrugated metal roofs. Its design also includes a large porch for gathering and teaching, reflecting the social importance of lodge porches throughout the village. The use of steel as a feature of the exterior reflects the old mill structure across Railroad Creek. In this way the newest building in the Village recalls an industrial past while fitting into the fabric of community and residential buildings.
In addition to being a place to celebrate Holden’s unique and complex history, the Portal Museum will function as a program space. Exhibit design will allow for flexible use of interior space with seating for up to 50. The exterior porch on the south end of the structure will seat 20. Combined with the western porch, the exterior space will function as a stage for outdoor concerts and other gatherings.
Washington State is a source of funds for this project and these funds are administered by the Washington State Historical Society.
Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
