Robert O. Smith

Robert O. Smith is an assistant professor of History at the University of North Texas with a research focus on the interactions of race, religion, and Indigeneity. Smith is an enrolled citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He is the author of More Desired than Our Owne Salvation: The Roots of Christian Zionism (Oxford, 2013). He also has three book projects under contract, co-researched and -written with UNT rhetoric and writing professor Aja Y. Martinez, on the history of Critical Race Theory.

SESSION DESCRIPTION

Recent attacks on the academic movement known as critical race theory (CRT) have been filled with tall tales and lies. With a focus on CRT founders Derrick Bell, Richard Delgado, Patricia Williams, and Mari Matsuda, participants will learn about the origins of CRT in the Civil Rights era and the movement’s deep foundations in liberationist faith.
