Mike Halvorson

Mike Halvorson, Ph.D., is a professor of history and innovation studies at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) who writes and teaches about history, religion, and emerging technology. He was an early employee at Microsoft, contributing to the development of Visual Studio and Microsoft Office. He also co-founded the Innovation Studies program at PLU, an interdisciplinary minor that emphasizes collaborative problem solving, human-centered design, and vocational reflection. Halvorson’s current work emphasizes social impact strategies and community-based curricula that fosters accountability, expands human agency, and protects the planet. He is a life-long Lutheran a member of Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle. His most recent book is This Little World: A How-To Guide for Social Innovators (2024), a text that offers practical strategies for supporting environmental causes, humanitarian initiatives, and more.

SESSION DESCRIPTION

Technological innovation often avoids careful scrutiny, but it infuses virtually all aspects of modern life. These sessions investigates the origins of America’s fascination with technology and explores how technological innovation can be more sustainable, trustworthy, and equitable. Hands-on sessions focus on evaluating technical systems, centered community needs, human-centered design, the ethical use of AI, and more.

      Education

      Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
