Flywheel Trio

Portland-based dance musicians George Penk (fiddle), Jesse Schafer (cello, guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, ukuleles), and Jeff Kerssen-Griep (guitar, bass, percussion), the “Flywheel Trio,” help others play tunes by ear and build happy connections via lively, mighty fiddle music aimed at the feet from Ireland, Quebec, Appalachia and beyond. Five-string cellist Jesse S. teaches melody, harmony, and rhythmic backup play on several instruments, and you’ve maybe heard George fiddling on NPR’s “All Songs Considered” or contra danced to George and Jeff’s band “Joyride” somewhere in the US (Jeff’s also taught communication courses at Holden over the years). All are accomplished players and expert, welcoming teachers seasoned in stirring groups’ skills and fun.

SESSION DESCRIPTION

In a society seemingly bent on isolating and dividing its people, how do we instead nurture grinning new connections with people around us? How can the unique powers of music and dance help us do that together?

NOTEPlease bring your folk instruments this week! Learners and listeners of any ability can attend all or any of these easygoing daily sessions to learn and play tunes with each other and these teachers – plus create and join added ‘pop-up’ chances to make music together this week. The week will begin with a faculty concert, then daily playing sessions will teach various means to help musically animate community social (contra, family) dancing later in the week – think of it like working on a painting all week as you also enjoy learning how it’s done together. Plan to learn some great tunes and their human backstories, enjoy growing how you play them with others, and relish the connections music-making creates.

Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
