Teaching Faculty

Barbara Rossing

Barbara is a New Testament professor who loves to teach and preach about the Bible, including the Bible’s role in public life. She served as pastor at Holden Village 1986-88, drawing on the biblical storytelling and liturgical work of Daniel Erlander. She continues to use Erlander’s books and cartoons in her teaching. An avid environmentalist, Rossing loves to hike, ski, and backpack. She is involved with environmental initiatives in the ELCA and at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, where she taught New Testament for 30 years. Her research focuses on the biblical book of Revelation, critiquing fundamentalist “rapture” interpretations and helping people gather around God’s world-healing tree of life.

SESSION DESCRIPTION

While “fun” is not a word most people associate with the Bible, Dan Erlander’s humor and pictures open up that important dimension of scriptural imagination. “Manna and
Mercy: A Brief History of God Unfolding Plan to Mend the Entire Universe” (1992)
draws on top-notch scholarship to present the Bible’s radical economic and social
concepts in ways that can speak to us today.

      Education

Holden Village is a community where your questions are valued and encouraged. Most programs led by visiting teaching faculty occur during the summer months. However, Holden also invites faculty to teach sessions for special events and retreats throughout the rest of the year.
